From 7 September to 28 October 2011, the Deutscher Künstlerbund (Association of German Artists) will present works by Anna Lea Hucht, winner of the 2011 »HAP-Grieshaber-Preis der VG Bild-Kunst« awarded by Stiftung Kunstfonds.

Hucht was born in Bonn in 1980 and studied in the master class of Prof. Erwin Gross. Her work consists primarily of watercolours and drawings. In complex and extremely detailed drawings of interiors, a central motif in her work, she offers insights into a world situated between the poles of realistic perception and surreal intimation. Ghostly figures move through bourgeois homes, leaving the viewer with an uneasy feeling. Seemingly familiar situations and moments hint at the presence of something else behind what is clearly visible. Since 2007, alongside her graphic works, the artist has been making elaborate ceramic objects.

In its project space, the Deutscher Künstlerbund will show a selection of still lifes and ceramic vases. In contrast to the architecturally constructed interiors with their cast of inhabitants, the things in Hucht’s still lifes stand entirely outside of any space or setting, focussing exclusively on the objects depicted. The motifs are taken from magazine illustrations of the 1950s and ‘60s or from natures mortes staged by the artist herself in which the interplay of light and shadow plays a major role. In the process of creating her watercolours, which might almost be called portraits, Hucht appropriates each object using a many-layered approach in an attempt to capture it. With her ceramic vases, she explores objects as beings: sculpted pairs of eyes stare back at the viewer from bulbous forms, reversing the usual direction of the gaze.

In February 2011, the jury of the Stiftung Kunstfonds awarded the artist Anna Lea Hucht with the »HAP-Grieshaber-Preis der VG Bild-Kunst«, which is endowed with €25,000, for outstanding artistic achievement.

The prize money for the »HAP-Grieshaber-Preis der VG Bild-Kunst« is made available by the VG Bild-Kunst from funds drawn from designated deductions from the distribution schemes for copyright fees paid to the VG Bild-Kunst.
